You know, you’ve got to love the camera’s ability to frame something completely out of context in order to create a little juvenile humor. The neon sign points to the C.O. Bigelow pharmacy at 414 6th Avenue. Selling drugs since 1838, C.O. Bigelow claims to be the oldest apothecary in America. The sign, however, dates from the 1930s.
Behind it is the steeple of the Jefferson Market Library. Built in 1876, it was originally a courthouse and a prison. E.E. Cummings was involved in the effort to turn it into a library and save it from the demolition ball in 1967.
