Poe
© Scott Schumaker

Poe woke up gray, skin feeling like knots
Mean reds swarming, holding her tight
Insides felt ripped by gunshot
Could barely stand the morning light

But body and blood told her get up and go

Whispered of another coming melee
So she got up, got dressed and downed some joe
Then went searching for sanctuary

[chorus]
And there in the mountains of silver and gold
Poe heard a voice saying could make her whole
Yah there in the mountains of silver and gold
Thinking she’ll find the lost path to her soul

Took a secret path on out of town
Headed west ‘long a tumbling stream
Symphony of wind the only sound
Asked herself if it was all a dream

Cause wildflowers danced with fields swaying green
Butterflies blazed their own crazy trails
With wings and petals like Japanese screens
Somehow they survive the world’s betrayals

[chorus]

A strong wind rose, smelling meadow sweet
Butterflies grabbed hold of that mighty gust
As life tapered down to Poe’s next heartbeat
She realized it all had to do with trust

She took a deep breath, felt the knots untie
Freed herself from the reds and the gray
Chose a new path, put spark in her eye
Now a fragile butterfly trusting her own way

[chorus]
