Dog Dreams
©Scott Schumaker

Who you are now
is as mysterious
as what dogs dream

fog smeared across the windshield
obscures your view of the road ahead

and

though surrounded by the world
you used to know

you are baffled and afraid
about the doorknob
spinning uselessly in your hand.

“Sure,” says he who has also held spinning doorknobs,
“when one door closes, another opens.
But being stuck in that hallway can really suck.”

Abso-freaking-lutely.

But this madness
is not a lotto jackpot –
a game of chance

it is the chasm of
turquoise, diamonds, glass shards and bones
I have created for you.

travel
forever and six miles
down its canyon

each moment and blood tear
as precious
as a baby’s breath

and one day
around the next bend
you’ll find

being free
to chase squirrels
is of what dogs dream

– sometimes.
