![]() Red tides in the ocean are caused by microscopic, single-cell algae that "bloom" under the right conditions. The "red tide" pictured here is the result of glucose left over in the leaves after photosynthesis stops in preparation for winter. The autumn sunlight and cooler nights turn the glucose red.
