R LINE'S STOP AT 34TH (5.24.07) |
In a Subway Station After a year I came again to the place; The tireless lights and the reverberation, The angry thunder of trains that burrow the ground, The hunted, hurrying people were still the same-- But oh, another man beside me and not you! Another voice and other eyes in mine! OK, The French Culinary Institute
on the corner of Broadway and Grand in New York City does not offer a
phone-a-chef course, but it will train you up for full chef-dom
in a mere 6 months, 9 months if you can only take night classes. They
call it their Total Immersion approach. If, however, you just want to
enjoy the fruits of the chefs in training, you can dine at the
institute's sister restaurant, L'ecole, which, of course, means "the school" in French. How witty.

But, the guys in this picture are the real men at work. Please pay attention while you're driving and do not decapitate them.

Although a multitude of countries have laid claim to having invented chess, most lean towards it originating in India in the sixth century. If not India then China is the next most likely contender. And, in case you're wondering who is the patron saint of chess, that would be St. Teresa of Avila.

Here stands the skeleton of the mill that gave Mill Valley, CA it's name. It was built in 1836 by one John Thomas Reed, an Irishman who was the first white guy to settle in Marin. After he cleared the surrounding area of trees, he subdivided it into irregular plots and the town of Mill Valley sprouted. (Photo of the mill from the 1890.)
