CHAIR ON A HOUSE (6.5.07) |
OK, this is a first for the PotD. I can't figure out a link to go with this photo. I could have sworn I once heard that nailing a chair to your house is suppose to be good luck, but I couldn't turn up anything. Anyone know why the hell you'd nail a chair to the outside of your house? Send in your answer and I'll post it with a future PotD. In the meantime, read up on some other superstitions, like the one about having a naked woman on board your boat will calm rough seas.

The sign belongs to the Moondance Diner and, just like the diner, dates from the 1930s. The diner (not the sign) has appeared in "Friends" and "Sex in the City" and was where Kirsten Dunst's character, Mary Jane, worked in "Spider-Man." Sadly it is either getting moved or knocked down to make way for luxury condos.

I've Been Waiting for You (I’ve been looking, I’ve been looking) (I’ve been looking, I’ve been looking) I’ve been looking For a woman To save my life Not to beg or to borrow A woman with a feeling Of loosing once or twice Who knows how it could be Be tomorrow
I’ve been waiting for you And you’ve been coming to me For such a long time now For such a long time now A woman with a feeling Of loosing once or twice Who knows how it could be Be tomorrow
I’ve been waiting for you And you’ve been coming to me For such a long time now For such a long time now For such a long time now
-recorded at one time or another by David Bowie, Neil Young and The Pixies, among others.

STROLLING DOWN BROADWAY (5.30.07) |
Questions: Is the man walking trying to offset a severe vitamin D deficiency? He is holding a Whole Foods bag. Is this his normal food-shopping attire? And does Whole Foods have a liberal clothing policy that only requires shopppers to wear shoes, socks and underwear in order to come inside and squeeze the produce?

It's an art installation outside Jussara Lee store in NYC's Meatpacking District. It's called "Increase Your Albedo!" The shirts are supposed to symbolize clouds. In this context, albedo is referring to the reflectivity of the earth's surface. The whole thing is intended to make you think about your own contribution to global warming or something like that. Read more and decide if the installation is effective or ridiculous by going here and typing "albedo" into the "live search" function.
