LAKE OF FIRE (7.4.07)

Lake of Fire
The Meat Puppets (covered by Nirvana)

Where do bad folks go when they die
They don't go to heaven where the angels fly
Go to a lake of fire and fry
see them again 'till the Fourth of July

I knew a lady who came from Duluth
Bitten by a dog with a rabid tooth
She went to her grave just a little too soon
Flew and lay down on the yellow moon

Where do bad folks go when they die
They don't go to heaven where the angels fly
Go to a lake of fire and fry
see them again 'till the Fourth of July

Scott's PaR: Water Tower (6.21.07)

Welcome to the first installment of the PotD's bastard stepchild, the PaR (Photo at Random). The PaR may come once a week, maybe more, maybe less. You'll never know when the PaR is going to strike! Today's photo features one of New York City's ubiquitous water towers. Prior to more current plumbing technology, the amount of pressure needed to get water beyond the fifth or sixth floor of a building would have burst the pipes down below. So, pumps in the basement were used to send water up to the towers, which then allowed the water to flow back down through the building. Many of these towers are still used today, and they are even required on new buildings in Tribeca whether they are used or not. Apparently, the overlords of Tribeca want to ensure the visual flavor water towers add to the skyline is not lost.

SCOTT (6.15.07)

Scott tells the PotD that putting together the PotD for the past year was often a challenge, especially on those days when it was 10 pm and he was like, "@&*%, gotta figure out a PotD!" or when he would spend waaay too much time trying to find something of interest to accompany the photo. But, more importantly, he found it was creative and inspiring and a very cool learning experience, and he really appreciates your interest and participation. He hopes you've enjoyed the photos, have some favorites, were moved on occasion, and learned some mostly useless bits of trivia. Be on the lookout for the PotW(eekly) or maybe the PotR(andom) in the future. And, by the way, why he chose to write this entry in third person is a damn good question. Ciao.

CUBANA COLORS @ DUSK (6.14.07)

I have no idea if the food is good at Cubana Cafe el Chulo, but they have a color scheme going that looks really good at dusk. According to one restaurant review the menu is inspired by meals the kitchen crews, who were apparently mostly Cuban, would cook for themselves at the owners' other restaurants.

THURIBLE (6.13.07)

The metal canister is called a thurible. The guy carrying it is titled the thurifer. Inside, charcoal burns incense. In the Catholic church incense smoke symoblize prayers rising to heaven and is also meant to purify whatever it touches. Here it was purifying the path of a small parade walking down NYC's Sullivan Street which was the culimination of the 57th Annual Novena and Feast of St. Anthony at the Shrine Church of St. Anthony of Padua. The use of incense in some ceremonial form has been and is used in many religions, including paganism, ancient Egypt, Hinduism and Buddhism.

STUCK (6.12.07)

This would be the scintillating view one gets to enjoy for 4.5 hours when your 5.5-hour flight from San Francisco to NYC is diverted to Buffalo because of bad weather and they won't let you off the plane. Weather was part of the problem no doubt, but the ever-increasing number of take-offs and landings probably played a role too. Keep that in mind the next time they blame your delay all on the elements.
